Lists

Overview

Lists are a great way to summarize important or verbose content, or they can also be used to specify a series or process. Using lists can also ensure that site visitors are reading the important content; many visitors are looking to find what they want quickly, so giving them a short and sweet list will do just that.

Lists come in two flavors: ordered (numbered) and unordered (bulleted). Ordered lists should be used to present a series, list of steps, or other content where the ordering is critical to its understanding. A good example for an ordered list would be defining the steps a student needs to take in order to be admitted into a school. Unordered lists should be used to present summaries of information or a grouping of small pieces of information. Something that would fit perfectly as an unordered list would be a collection of the documents a student needs to have submitted for admission.

Creating an Empty List

If you wish to create a new numbered/bulleted list, and the content for the list is not yet on the page, you can create a "blank" list and type in the content.

  1. Place your cursor in the page on a line by itself.
  2. Click the Insert/Remove Numbered List button or the Insert/Remove Bulleted List button, depending on which list type you want to use.
  3. The editor will immediately create a new numbered/bulleted list for you to use. You can begin typing content into the list.
  4. Select the list, or any element within it, then click the "ul" below in the bottom tray of the page editor. This ensures you have the entire list selected before applying the bullet style. Now, select List (circle), List (disc) or List (square) from the styles drop down.

Formating Text as a List

The Campusuite editor can take any text on a page and immediately transcribe it into a numbered/bulleted list.

When processing a text selection to convert it to such a list, the editor will use line breaks (hard or soft) to determine how to break up the content into the list.

  1. Select and highlight the content you wish to make into a numbered/bulleted list.
  2. In the Editor Toolbar, click the Insert/Remove Numbered List button or the Insert/Remove Bulleted List button, depending on which list type you want to use.
  3. The editor will immediately create a numbered/bulleted list of the content you selected.
  4. Select the list, or any element within it, then click the "ul" below in the bottom tray of the page editor. This ensures you have the entire list selected before applying the bullet style. Now, select List (circle), List (disc) or List (square) from the styles drop down.

Editing the Properties of a List

For the most part, lists do not have many properties associated with them, however, there are a few that you can configure to change the appearance of the lists.

  1. Right-click within the bounds of the list you wish to edit. The List Context Menu will show.
  2. Select the Numbered List Properties item or the Bulleted List Properties item, depending on which list type the content is. The List Properties dialog will show.
  3. Edit the fields as desired. View a description of this interface for reference. View a description of this interface for reference.
  4. Once satisfied, click the OK button to retain the changes and update the list, or click the Cancel button to ignore the changes.

Adding and Removing Items from a List

After a list has been created, it is very easy to add items to it.

If you want to add content to an item that includes line breaks, you will need to use soft breaks instead of hard breaks, since hard breaks force a new item to be made in the list. To insert a soft break, press Shift+Enter instead of simply pressing Enter.

Adding at the Start of a List

  1. Place your cursor at the beginning of the text for the first list item.
  2. Type in the content.
  3. Since the cursor should rest between the new content that you added and the previous content of the first item, you can press the Enter/Return key on your keyboard to push the previous content onto a new line, thus creating a new list item for it.

Adding Elsewhere in a List

  1. Place your cursor at the end of the text at the list item that comes immediately before where you would want the new item placed.
  2. Press the Enter/Return key on your keyboard. A new line will be made, thus creating a blank list item for you to use.
  3. Type your content into the space for the new item.

Removing Anywhere in a List

  1. Select and highlight the content for the item you wish to remove from the list.
  2. Press the Backspace/Delete key on your keyboard. This should delete all of the content for the item. If any content remains, select and remove it in the same manner.
  3. The cursor should now be resting at the beginning of an empty list item. Press the Backspace key on your keyboard. This should remove the list item, and place your cursor at the end of the previous list item, if one exists. If your list is a numbered list, the numbering should automatically change to reflect the removal of the item.

Clearing List Formatting from Text

If text is changed to be a numbered/bulleted list, it can also very easily be changed back to regular text.

  1. Select and highlight the content you wish to change back to normal text. This can be the entire list, or single list items. If you choose a list item in the middle of a list to to clear the list formatting from, and the list type is numbered, it will force the items after it to restart their numbering.
  2. In the Editor Toolbar, click the Insert/Remove Numbered List button or the Insert/Remove Bulleted List button, depending on which list type the content is.
  3. The editor will immediately remove the numbered/bulleted list formatting from the text selection.
