Hyperlinks

Overview

Hyperlinks are important components to the web, and there will most likely be many pages in your site that utilize them. Hyperlinks can point to local content that exists on your server, or can point to external resources.

Three kinds of links can be inserted into a page using the page editor:

Link to URLs: A URL link is a hyperlink that points to some kind of web content, whether it is a PDF document, an image, or another web page.

Link to Anchors: Anchors are special tags that can be placed onto a page that allows a hyperlink to, instead of linking to a new page, link to a certain section or area on the current page.

Link to Email Addresses: Email links can be inserted into pages and used to automatically open and compose a message in your email client. It is important to know that these links do not send out actual emails. Instead, they are used to help in creating a message in an email client that the visitor can alter and send to the specified address. In order for email links to work properly, it requires support by multiple pieces of software on a computer: the browser, the email client, and even the operating system. Depending on the configuration of a visitors computer, they may or may not be able to fully utilize these links.

Inserting a Hyperlink

  1. Select with your cursor the text on a page you want to make into a hyperlink. It is recommended that this selection does not span over any hard breaks in the content.
  2. Click the Insert/Edit Hyperlink button in the Editor Toolbar. The Link Properties dialog will be shown.
  3. Fill out the fields as needed. View a description of this interface for reference.
  4. Once finished, click the OK button to add the hyperlink to the content that was selected.
  5. To link to a video, external site or content to be displayed in (Fancybox) popup, select and apply link as you normally do. Once the link is updated and the URL applied, select the "a" link in the bottom tray of the editor to ensure the correct selection, then apply Link popup (basic) or Link popup (iframe/video) using the styles drop down.

Editing a Hyperlink

  1. Click somewhere in the text of the hyperlink. It is unnecessary to select the entire section of text that has the link.
  2. Click the Insert/Edit Hyperlink button in the Editor Toolbar. The Link Properties dialog will be shown.
  3. Edit the fields as needed. View a description of this interface for reference.
  4. Once satisfied with the changes, click the OK button to update the link on the page. If you do not wish for the changes to be made, simply click the Cancel button, and the link will remain as it was on the page.

Editing the Text of a Hyperlink

If you added a link to a page, and then need to modify the text of the link, the editor can handle many of these changes rather easily.

If you find yourself need to make significant or complex changes to text that is associated with a link, you may obtain better results if you delete the link altogether, make your changes to the text, and then re-apply the link. For more advanced users, you can also choose to edit the HTML source of the page to ensure that the bounds of the link are kept properly as you make your edits.

Changing the Text Within a Hyperlink

  1. Place your cursor within the bounds of the link (you can check this by seeing if the Remove Hyperlink button in the toolbar is enabled or not).
  2. Type whatever text you need; it will become part of the link. Also, you can use your Backspace/Delete keys to remove text from the link just as you would anywhere else in the editor.

Removing Text from the Front/End of a Hyperlink

  1. Place your cursor at either endpoint.
  2. Use your Backspace/Delete key to remove the text (depending on the placement of the cursor).

Inserting Text at the Front/End of a Hyperlink

Inserting text at the endpoints of a link can be tricky. If text is inserted at these positions directly, the editor does not associate that text with the link. To workaround this, you can try the following method:

  1. Place your cursor just inside the text of the link. For instance, if you need to add onto the end of the text, place your cursor right before the last character, or if at the beginning, place your cursor right after the first character.
  2. Make the changes that you need. When finished, simply delete the extra first and/or last characters that you no longer need.

Removing a Hyperlink

  1. Click somewhere within the text of the hyperlink. It is unnecessary to select the entire section of text that is associated with the link.
  2. When a link is selected in the workspace, the Remove Hyperlink button in the Editor Toolbar is then enabled. Click the Remove Hyperlink button.
  3. The link will immediately be removed from the text; the text itself will remain intact.
