Finding and Replacing Text

Overview

The find and replace tool of the editor can be an invaluable asset. Global text replacements are made quickly with only a few clicks, which is must faster than having to read the entire page and make changes manually.

Be careful, though, especially when making global replacements. Depending on the text you search for and the settings you have made, you could run the risk of replacing text (such as portions of words) that was not intended to be replaced. (If you find such a mistake has happened, and you have already saved the page, you can always use the page history to revert back to a previous version of the page.)

Finding Text

  1. Click the Find button on the Editor Toolbar. The Find and Replace dialog will show. The dialog should automatically open to the Find tab.
  2. Set the parameters for the search in the Find and Replace Dialog. View a description of this interface for reference.
  3. Click the Find button.
  4. The dialog box will remain open, but it will start highlighting the matches that it finds in the editor. Continue to click the Find button in order to iterate through all of the matches. You will be alerted if the text is not found on the page.
  5. When finished, click the Cancel button to close the dialog.

Replacing Text

  1. Click the Replace button on the Editor Toolbar. The Find and Replace dialog will show. The dialog should automatically open to the Replace tab.
  2. Set the parameters for the search in the Find and Replace Dialog. View a description of this interface for reference.
  3. From here, you can choose to replace a single instance or all instances of the text.
    • To replace only the first match, click the Replace button. The first time this button is clicked, the editor will only highlight the match if found. To actually perform the replacement, click the Replace button again.
    • If you wish to replace every match, click the Replace All button. This button will only need to be clicked once, as it immediately performs the replacements. You will be alerted as to how many replacements were actually made.
  4. Once done with the replacements, click the Cancel button on the dialog to close it.
