Adding a Page

Overview

Pages will make up a large portion of the content of your site. Although pages will be updated, for the most part they will contain static (unchanging) content. Widgets (formerly components) and things can be used to dynamically pull in content from modules and such, but the information you enter in the page editor will usually not change very often.

Pages and navigation go hand-in-hand, as creating a page will ultimately lead to a navigation item being created for it. Once created, a page is not entirely tied to its navigation; a navigation item can be deleted while keeping the page on the server, or the page can be linked to more than one navigation item.

Although a page can exist without navigation, it is recommended that you do not uses pages this way very often, if ever. If you want to create a page that does not show up in the navigation, you can hide the navigation item from the site. View the documentation on hiding pages and navigation for information on this.

Parent and Child Navigation

Pages can be added as parent navigation or child navigation. Parent navigation are the first-level navigation items in a web site. Child navigation are the sub-level items that exist "under" other navigation.

Take for instance the following site map:

  • Home
  • Departments
    • Finance
    • Marketing
      • Course Descriptions
  • Staff
  • ...

The parent navigation items for the site map above are "Home", "Departments", and "Staff". In a way, a parent navigation item can be thought of as an item which does not have a parent itself. If any navigation item has a parent page, then it is automatically a child page of its parent. For example, the "Finance" and "Marketing" items are child navigation to "Departments". Furthermore, "Course Descriptions" is a child navigation of "Marketing".

So, when adding a page, you will need to decide where it is to go, and from there, you can actually add the page into the navigation and start editing it.
